Holidays in the Jungle

We were so very pleased to be able to travel to Mexico for Christmas and New Year's and our second visit to the Explorean. I think we were the only Americans there during our 10-night stay, but our efforts of using some spotty Spanish and conversing with some very good Enlish speaking staff made it a perfect holiday experience. We flew into Cancun and had a 5-hr drive to the resort. We appreciated English-speaking guides who gave us a separate experience from the rest of the activity participants. It is actually in consideration of the Spanish speakers when they don't have to hear explanations twice, and it saves time in the activities. Our favorite activity was kayaking and walking through the amazing mangrove "forest" and swimming in pristine turquoise waters. Seeing the breathtaking carpet of stars during the night kayaking was also a highlight. Sometimes we were surprised--but pleasantly--by mistranslated (on my part) meal items. The staff was always working to make the guests happy, and flexibility on the guests' part makes the stay here far more enjoyable. Bring a book (or several) that you've been wanting to read, because the days and evenings can have "down time." Wifi is only available in the main lobby and dining room areas. We had a car and drove to Chetumal and had an outstanding tour and tutorial of Mayan history from Lorenzo Gonzalez, who spoke excellent English and was recommended by the Explorean concierge. We would strongly encourage Explorean guests to experience this because it is a "deeper dive" into the Mayan culture and history of Chetumal than you will get in the resort activities. Mucha gracias to all of the wonderful Explorean staff for bringing 2021 to a delightful end and starting 2022 in such a wonderful way for us.
What comes out of the jungle next?

We spent 7 nights at the Explorean. The hotel is in the middle of the jungle. So we really relied on the activities provided by the hotel as there is not much to access close by, unless you have your own transportation. We went on several of the planned activities that were included with the stay including a tour of Kohunlich ruins, two trips to the Lake of 7 colors and the night Kayaking. We also booked two days of the optional additional paid activities, including a tour of Calakmul and snorkeling in Mahahual. A lot of time in the transportation vans but worth the travel. We loved all the activities. Several of the guides spoke English and really helped us, as our Spanish was minimal. At the hotel we spent time at the pool, enjoyed the food and spa. We loved all of the flora and fauna we got to see as well. The area is really beautiful. We were so excited to see howler monkeys at the ruins and spider monkeys on the night hike. So cool! It was a great trip but watch out for the luke warm showers and dangerous toilet seats. Also check the hammock before you sit in it. You never know what you might find.
Jungle living but thankful for air

If you want to be out in the middle of nowhere and live simply this is your place. Rooms were decent. Pool was ok and food at restaurant was good. Loved the excursions they organized for us. Service was not so great and we constantly had to ask for service both at the restaurant and bar area. Property sales were happening constantly and were like vultures in the restaurant.
This is ok… if you are fond of the jungle experience. 2 nights seems to be a maximum

This is lost in the jungle, a few steps away from a great and deserted maya site. The hotel is ok but there are a few buts: - aside from getting drunk with you some locals, this is not much to be done in the jungle, even if the hotel proposes some activities - there are bugs - waiters barely speak a few words of English, ordering food and drinks is a challenge and sometimes they’ll just take your order but never serve you - rooms are small houses lost in the jungle : depending on how lucky you are, you can be very far away from the restaurant: pool - beds are too small
Best resort experience

Explorean is a small resort in the middle of the jungle. This is a very well maintained property with comfortable rooms and friendly staff. It is a great place to go to if are looking for a relaxing retreat and/or want activities that explore nature in the and archeological sites in the southern part of the Yucatan Peninsula.
