Third time lucky

After having had the two worst experiences ever at other hotels in Rio (Belmond and Chateaux Joa), I finally tried to salvage things by booking into the Emiliano shortly after New Year, and I was not disappointed. The rooms are simple, understated wood on marble, carefully and tastefully interior designed, which flow seamlessly into the rolling sea view. Everything is new and works well, and the details have all been attended to. Yes the hotel is on Copacabana and as such is a little loud if you are a light sleeper but apart from that the location is amazing, in the good area of the Strip, with easy access to Ipanema and surrounding restaurants. Everyone talks about the rooftop pool and that is indeed breathtaking and instantly recognisable (read Instagramabble). But for me the Atrium downstairs was equally impressive, particularly the huge living wall that decorates the outside space. This whole area was very quiet and ideal for working. As an aside there were a lot of people, like me, on laptops doing some work, and I can attest to the fact that the internet is very fast, stable and reliable. There are also several nice areas in which to hop on a laptop and do the digital nomad thing in a relaxed setting. The food in all areas of the restaurant is best in class, particularly breakfast downstairs and lunch on the rooftop, both with plenty of variety and healthy options. The service was impeccable, and they did everything they could to make our stay special. Thank you Emiliano and staff, you saved my first impressions of a very dark, rainy, crowded New Years Rio.

Honest review from a travel industry professional

I kept hearing about the Emiliano Hotel in Rio because of its success in Sao Paulo, and I was looking forward to staying at this hotel. I booked it via Expedia because of it’s VIP Access package, which includes a free upgrade to the next room category, free breakfast and late check-out. All subject to availability of course. Unfortunately when I arrived, the hotel would not honour the free upgrade offer, even though they were still selling rooms in the next category. They made up excuses, and tried to charge me for the upgrade, so I eventually ended up staying in the same category I booked. Maybe change the wording from “subject to availability” to “at the discretion of the hotel”? For a corporate traveller the facilities of the hotel are good. Stable and fast internet, international TV channels, USB charging points and good water pressure in the shower. But don’t expect to feel welcomed here. The warm hospitality which Brazil is famous for has gone out of the window at the Emiliano. You are being made to feel that you should be grateful that you are allowed to stay at this hotel. I don’t think during my entire stay I have seen any of the reception staff smile or happy, and I Ioved Debora and Analua who won’t even look at you when you come to the desk. Or the “butler” Lacerda who will put you in your place if you asked the wrong questions. I loved the answer I got when I asked how long it takes for laundry to be delivered back to the room. I was told “it depends what is says on the label of your clothes”. None of the reception staff can make any decision on their own. They always have to disappear to the back office to check everything with the Manager. And if you need something in morning, you will need to wait, because the Manager only comes to work at 11am. One of the show pieces of the hotel is the infinity pool on the top floor. Unfortunately when I arrived it was covered with scaffolding. This was later replaced with another structure, which covered the entire area with a transparent plastic roof. If you ever wondered how it feels to be baked, then please spend some time on the roof of the Emiliano Hotel. None of the construction work was of course mentioned anywhere on their website. You will only find out when you get there. I have attached some photos. This hotel is made for clients who want to be seen and show off, who don’t care about practicalities and hospitality. You can get some great Instagram pictures out of the Emiliano, but it does not reflect the quality of the stay. If I would have to summarize, I would say – good rooms, poor Management, arrogant and inflexible staff. My suggestion, stay somewhere else. There are better and more friendly 5 star hotels in Rio within this price range.

Best hotel in Copacabana!

Reviewed 7 september, 2021

As new residents to Rio, we stayed here for a week and it was fabulous! The rooftop pool is quaint and offers amazing views of Copacabana. Our guest, which also boasted incredible views, was modern and clean and had a huge soaking tub in the bathroom with great amenities! Hotel Emiliano’s mission is “to provide extraordinary experiences while cherishing our clients”…. And that’s exactly what they did! We enjoyed delicious turn down treats every night and I received a personalized hot tea set up in our room as they knew I preferred to drink tea over coffee. Creating and providing unique guest experiences like this goes a long way and was very much appreciated! We look forward to visiting again!

Best hotel in Rio

Reviewed 25 march, 2021

We are wishing that we were back in Rio at the Emiliano as we are writing this review. The hotel is gorgeous and the modern contemporary design was carefully throughout throughout the hotel. The service was very attentive and all the employees were very pleasant and went above and beyond in their service. Our room was spacious and amazingly comfortable. We had an ocean facing view with gorgeous views of Copacabana and woke up to beautiful sunrises every morning. The bathrooms also with amazing rainfall showers and bathtub. The food was also delicious and beautifully plated from the a la carte breakfast, to the poolside dishes and the dinner at Emile. We were there during the pandemic and felt very safe and all the employees were abiding by the safety precautions. When we were looking at hotels in Rio, we did not know whether to stay at Fasano or Emiliano. We ended up staying at both and split the times between the two. Let me just tell you, we much preferred the the service, the hotel/room and food at the Emiliano. Fasano was only good for people watching at the pool.

Never felt so unsafe in a hotel before!

Reviewed 23 november, 2020

Emiliano was supposed to be a nice hotel! The architeture is unique, the room spotlessly clean, wonderful view of Copacabana Beach, but it turned to be a noghtmare! Check in was ok, a female butler took as to the room! Clarice explained how everything worked, even the fancy toilet seat! She failed not to give a call back to check if everything was ok! I like to be warm when I sleep, and I happened to meet some housekeepers at the elevator hall and asked for a blanket! As they never brought, I had to make a call requesting one! But the worst part of my 1 night stay was during the night! It was almost 4 am when a man forced the door trying to break into the room! I was so frightened! I screamed loud and could hear he saying : sorry, sorry! I called front desk and I let an employee called Alves know what has happened! I could barely slept again! I was so scared! Few Hours late I asked for a manager and the manager on duty was Camila! She told me that she checked the cameras and an employee was bringing room service and knocked in the wrong door! I used to stay in hotels several times a Year and never saw somebody forcing the door to deliver room service! My mistake: not had called the Police! Back to São Paulo I called the hotel and a manager called Thais told me that she was going to find out what had happened! By the end of the afternoon, somebody called Helena talked to apologize and invited me to a cup of coffee , which I declined! I must say that I left the hotels a couple of times and never met a Security Guard! At the entrance there were just the bellboy and the doorman! Rio is a beautiful City, with high levels of violence! It is such a pity that Emiliano hotel didnt care about my security!
