In short, a terrible place.

In short, a terrible hotel with poor service. Damp rooms, camouflaged smell with sentsticks or air fresheners.. Poorly managed. A note for the management, When you bad mouth your customers, make sure they or no one else can overhear you in the parking lot..... Stay away from this hotel.

Avoid ... gave it a go and regretted it.

Stayed for 2 nights in a twin room. TV was very old and barely worked on 2 channels. Shower was hardly working. Joss sticks were being burned to mask some smell. This is the reason chain hotels are taking over. The place is tired, tatty and unloved. Definitely just go to the Travelodge down the road.

Good other than the stairs and the fact our reservation was lost

Reviewed 8 august, 2021

My first thing would be to say is do not use Booking.com, as the Carlton was the second hotel in less than a month not to be expecting us after we booked through them. We therefore ended up in one of the rooms with access up the fire escape flagged by other reviewers as a heath and safety risk. This needs sorting out, especially with the bits of wire mesh sticking out. If it was not for this, my rating would have been much higher. This is a very conveniently situated hotel and I would go there again but ask for a different room with internal stairs or stairs free access. The staff were lovely and the newly refurbished room room was very clean and comfortable with all the amenities including tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water. Full English breakfast was delicious. One last point: the entrance to the guest car park is quite narrow so you need a steady hand driving in!

Very nice and clean hotel with friendly staff

I've had last minute reservation. Booking.com didn't worked but I sort out my booking over the phone with very friendly gentleman-probably owner or a manager. He explained me everything and send me all codes via text message due to late time. Room is very nice clean and tidy without even a sing of dust also TV is good size. Bedding is clean and ironed bathroom is spotless. It's in good location with 24/7 shop just round the corner. I would definitely recommend this hotel :)

Very tired hotel and in need of total refurbishment

Reviewed 20 july, 2021

Whilst the staff were welcoming and the beds comfortable, the poor state of the hotel generally was disappointing. Our toilet stopped working and wouldn't flush. The manager came and had a look but advised it needed a plumber. He didn't think he would get one as it's the weekend. In my view, the hotel should have an emergency plumber available for these problems. We were told to use the shared toilet but this isn't acceptable during the night and with a baby. The shower was ineffective and only gave a trickle of water. We had to put an elastoplast around the remote control in order to keep the batteries in otherwise it wouldn't work. I can't fault the two staff members I came into contact with however, although the breakfast was very nice and plentiful, one of our party is gluten free and we were not given the option in advance of being able to highlight this. Therefore, she was unable to eat much of the breakfast. In my view the hotel is very tired and would benefit from a complete refurbishment.
