Hurry, book another hotel
Reviewed 7 September, 2021
Didn't even close to what I expected. I booked the Master's Suite at over $400/ night. When I arrived, I was told they had no parking left and I had to drive a few blocks away to park my car in whatever lot I could find. The room smelled horribly like smoke and just felt dirty. Everything is very dated
Exactly What I Expected

I checked into the Solamar because it is one of few hotels in the city that has jacuzzi tubs in some of the rooms. Having read all of the negative reviews, I was expecting the worst. Honestly, I really don't know what hotel those reviewers were expecting or what hotel they stayed at. Everything about my time at Solamar was great. The front desk staff was nice and helpful when checking in. My room, while quirky in its style, was what the hotel promised in its pictures. The A/C worked fine. The room was clean. The bed was wonderfully comfortable. The TV worked fine. The wifi worked fine. They served coffee in the lobby. The pool deck and bar were relaxing. There were no barking dogs. I couldn't hear my neighbors. I could see out of the windows (I had a corner room with three sets of them). And best of all . . . the remarkably deep (like a personal hot tub honestly) jacuzzi tub in my room was PERFECT. I live in the city, so I was also happy to see that the hotel was just far enough from the main Gaslamp strip that it was quiet and safe, but still super walkable. I wanted "late" check out at noon and they happily extended it just like I experience at other hotels, for free.
Yes, I think the "guest amenities fee" is dumb, especially since I didn't need yoga lessons, but I used my $10 credit on stuff I would have paid for, so it was only $15 (essentially the cost of upgraded Wi-Fi at other hotels . . like the brand name hotel next door).
Yes, they only have valet parking and it is expensive—same cost as the brand name hotel next door—that I didn't pay because there is a perfectly safe/secure public parking garage two blocks away for $16 a day. Alternately, you can self-park in the brand name hotel next door for $35, but why? Walk the two blocks (6th and Market).
So, yeah, I suppose everyone's experience is different, but mine was nothing like most of the negative ones. I'm glad that, while I read every one before making my reservation, I decided to gamble and check in anyway.
Not the best

The rooms are dirty and old. Windows and bathroom mirrors were not washed. Everything felt unclean. It definitely did not feel like the class of hotel that it represents itself to be.
Only saving grace is location, which is ideal.
Solamar 4 out of 5 Stars

I came to San Diego for 4th of July weekend and stayed at Hotel Solamar and I was very pleased. The room I had was very nice, clean and spacious. The city views were nice and it was centrally located, walking or Ubering was less than 10-15min in any direction. I will say it was not the BEST stay I've ever had at a hotel but I managed to book a room less than 8 days before the 4th and they had reasonable rates even days away from a holiday.
PRO: Views, location, friendly staff, nice amenities
CON: Took almost an entire week to confirm my reservation which lead to some stressful moments, No breakfast or eating area you have to leave property for food aside from the pool bar
All in all, I would definitely stay here again, the cons weren't a big issue once I got there but they should be known.

We got this room as a birthday gift for my GF, so we were only in town one night. Couple major issues that I could not overlook during my stay.
1. The bed was the most uncomfortable, cheap, springy nightmare I had ever seen in a "upscale hotel".
2. Tried calling front desk multiple times and could not get a hold of anyone.
3. Finally after numerous attempts we contacted the front desk to ask for a fan, they said it would be a few minutes......fan never showed up.
4. We were in a hearing impaired room (neither of us is hearing impaired) and it had the loudest constant whistling noise through the window. It sounded like the HVAC system so it made that sound for the entirety of the trip.
Personally I would never in a million years ever stay at this hotel again, way to expensive and you get ZERO beneftis.
