Horrible stay at Marriott Union Square. Don’t stay here!!!!

Awful experience at Marriott union square. No hot water when showering in the morning. Called front desk who sent an engineer to look at the problem. He was so rude. He talked down to me and told me to stop talking so he can speak. No bottled water in the room. Basic hotel room that looks like you are staying at a holiday inn. I would never stay at this hotel again. Gives the Marriott brand a bad name.


Excellent service and great location

They did the best they could in California Covid shutdown, with Executive lounge open with a limited service, the restaurant for breakfast and great clean rooms. Front desk staff was amazingly responsive and even anticipatory. I was very impressed and you can walk out the door to a street car.

Well I arrived after a long journey 18 hours from home and 2 flights. No welcome to the Marriott (actually NO welcome at all) ! Handed the guy my passport and he asked for my credit card, I said to him you cannot spend money in the hotel so why take card details. He said in case anything is damaged ?? I am a solo lady aged 70 ?? I gave him my card to which he said they take a hold of $75 each night (I was staying 6 nights). Anyway he then gave me my room card, no explanation of anything in the hotel, where I go to get the lift to my room ?? He was so rude, really put me off staying there. I asked which days the restaurant was open and he handed me two pieces of printed notes detailing this and what restaurants are around locally. When I got to my room with my luggage (no one offered to help) I was delighted, it was a large room with a sofa in and everything I needed, until I showered!! No shower gel, 2 shampoo bottles on the wall and a conditioner. I let reception know when I was on my way out and hoped it was there when I came back, but NO had to ask yet again. The bed, pillows etc were amazing and I slept well most of the time. Starbucks was just opposite the hotel so I walked over there most morning and brought back breakfast to the room. Walgreens is on the opposite corner for incidentals. The area is wonderful and close to most things in the centre of SF, Union Square and Macy’s is a five minute walk, and the cable cars go right past the hotel on Powell Street. I slept overnight in Edinburgh in a Marriott before taking my first flight and the receptionist there was rude as well. Travellers do not need this attitude, if your in the hospitality trade please put a smile on your face ! Two staff who were lovely were my housekeeper Liyu and receptionist Xia Minyi who very kindly printed off my documents for me and answered a few questions without being abrupt! Would I stay there again, probably not there is so many lovely hotels around the same area.

Great location and brand BUT 2 star performance

We chose Mariott because its a trusted name BUT, no water, no slippers, no mini-bar (there is ref but empty), safe has no battery. Hotel and sheets are clean. OK not much we can do about expensive parking because its San Francisco. We arrived past midnight and their parking closes at 11pm. Other parking are open 24/7. What an inconvenience.

Excellent location near Union square with ample restaurants and bars nearby. The cleanliness of the property, modern room design and comfortable mattress are all that one would expect from a standard Marriott property. Coupled with the friendliness of the staff (in particular Kelley at the front desk), this represents a great business hotel. Unfortunately, the restaurant and bar remain closed and there's no room service. Irritatingly, bottles of water aren't even available in the room, necessitating paying $3.10 from the vending machines down the hall. Edit: I originally rated this property 2 stars but following outreach by Nathan who apologized for the fact that restaurant and bar are not open, I have revised my rating. Nathan informs me that the bar and restaurant will be opening soon in which case this property will deserve its 5 star rating.
