More about the hotel
Very unprofessional - beware - short notice reservation cancelation on Holiday weekend!
This hotel sent me a cancellation notice just over 2 weeks prior to my reservation dates. I had made a reservation and paid a 50% deposit over two months prior to the planned vacation. The dates of my original reservation were for the Mexican Independence Day Sept-16th weekend. The busiest weekend of the year for San Miguel. Basically left out to dry. Totally unprofessional. Shady. Beware and good luck. I have traveled all over the world, never has this happened to me. BS. They mention "safety" concerns as their reason.
Quaint B&B
Charming B&B with nice staff. Each room (currently there are 4 but they will be expanding) is decorated with charm and sophistication. We rented the whole place, which is really the best way. Gaby who is super sweet had a fruit platter and a charming table set when you came downstairs (between 9-11) and cooked to order a different breakfast each day. She cleaned the rooms while you visit the town. Usually by the time you come back from sightseeing staff is gone and you have the house to yourself. Currently there is no AC but there are plans to expand and have AC in the new rooms. Nights are cool enough and the beds are very comfortable and plenty of pillows. Robes, towels, books, blow dryer and WiFi are all available in the room. Yes it is a little noisy if you leave the windows/doors open but the restaurant next door played some nice Jazz music so we didn’t mind. Much better TV selections than most hotels. 3rd floor terrace and rooftop patio are great for relaxing and have a wonderful view! I would highly recommend especially when the weather isn’t quite as hot. It was almost 90 during the day when we were there and rooms were still comfortable for the majority of our stay. First night was an adjustment but took a shower before going to sleep after that and it was perfect.
Not worth it
We needed a relatively short notice reservation for San Miguel. Few rooms were available, and Casa Florida looked like the best of the lot. At nearly $200 night it was pricey but we figured that was the penalty for being late-planners. The reading material in the bathroom was an Architectural Digest about eclecticism in Mexico, and Casa Florida certainly fit that category -- cast concrete bathtub and sink, a variety of furniture styles, random unmatched bath linens, found an instruction sheet for Apple TV tucked away on a bookcase the last day but no remote, It is, however, a small place, which means everyone hears everything, including late night partiers staggering up the stairs. The staff was friendly but generally not up to snuff: no coverage at all overnight (so I don't what we'd have done in an emergency, and see above about late night arrivals), rudimentary tourism known;edge, we had to ask every day for bottled water, etc. The kitchen is well-appointed with imported appliances but breakfast every day was the EXACT SAME THING, served late (0900) and at (to be kind) a deliberate pace. We found several places between CF and the Jardin that were generally half the cost with superior amenities so we'll be elsewhere when/if we return to SMA.
Great spot, but weekends are noisy!
This is a terrific little B&B right in the heart of the city. It is within walking distance to major sites, including the main square. The staff is really nice and accommodating. One drawback was the noise on the weekends. The balcony rooms sounded like a great idea, until Friday rolls around. You will have no choice, between the unbelievable traffic, the booming music, and the loud valet right across the street, but to shutter your windows and deal with the heat. It was quite uncomfortable over the weekends. The fan in the room was an adequate, and there is absolutely no air conditioning, despite hitting 90° weather for multiple days. I also would have liked to see more ability to book sidetrips through the B&B. Do your own research and book independently, as any options they threw out were quite expensive relative to the actual cost (for example, a trip to Guanajuato was quoted at US$180 for a car for the day. That same trip cost seven dollars each Way on a luxury bus). Breakfast is OK, and it's the same every single day. They were very accommodating when we wanted to have breakfast earlier than 9 AM. Overall, I would stay here again, but would definitely try and find a quieter room, or would opt for a hotel with air conditioning in the summer.
LIFE AT CASA FLORIDA- APRIL , 2017
Casa Florida is located in a marvelous & convenient part of the Colonial (Old Town ) San Miguel. It's but a few steps from several good restaurants & a short walk ( 2 blocks ) from the Jardin. The house is charming, & has been modernized in everyday that an American tourist would want......bathrooms & kitchen !Yet , they preserved the Old World ambiance for the remainder of the 3 story villa .We had a little difficulty with no water for one of our showers , but it was quickly remedied by the ( American ) landlord .A sweet , no- English speaking housekeeper arrived around 8 every morning to prepare our breakfasts ( whatever we wanted ! ) & to make beds , was dishes & do light housekeeping. She would also make guacamole for a later afternoon snack. The kitchen was well equipped , as was the entire house 9WiFi , included ). My only complaint was the street noise ! We kept our windows open to keep the temperature pleasant in our bedrooms, but in doing so , the street noises ( well into the wee hours of the morning ! ) were quite bothersome & making it difficult to sleep . Bring ear plugs !!! Do be aware of the seasonal outdoor temperatures when you book your trip. There is no A.C. & only small space heaters for cooler weather. I think that is probably true for all over the Colonial sector. But , San Miguel does have a pretty moderate temperature year-around. Case Florida has 4 lovely bedrooms , each with attached full bathrooms., plus a 1/2 bath located by the living areas . We 4 couples had plenty of space for eating , visiting , etc.. There is a beautiful view from the roof top patio. Overall , it was a nice place to stay !
