Very Enjoyable
Traveled solo and splurged on staying in a full-sized suite. Room was spacious, nicely-decorated, clean, and comfortable. It came with king-sized bed, sofa, walk-in closet, work desk, two chairs and two loungers on the balcony. Bed is a bit on the firm side. Open bathroom concept was odd but did not bother me. Fridge was fully-stocked and replenished with bottled water and soda (yay for Pepsi!) daily. Housekeepers did a great job keeping it tidy. Shower stall was wide and water pressure was strong. Food in the main buffet restaurant was abundant. Seemed like it was all-out, nothing held back. Shrimp was present day and night; lobster (as buffet selection) was available on certain nights. I stayed for eight nights - and while I started to taste the same thing over and over - I would always find something new. Freshly-squeezed fruit juices during breakfast were amazing! Not into pool, so I stayed in beach all the time. Area was clean and a security personnel stood at the entrance. Beach service (drinks only) was attentive. There were many vendors who will politely leave you in peace if you tell them that you are not interested. Location is great. Playacar is secured, both from motorists and pedestrians. Quinta Avenida and shops are about 15-20 minutes leisurely walk. Personnel are friendly and warm. One caveat: if you book the hotel's free shuttle, you must reconfirm it - not with the hotel but the transportation operator, which also operates tours. They are located in the hotel but when you sit with them, they will sell you excursions. Resort was wonderful and would stay again.
FANTASTIC
We just finished our week at the Riu palace. My husband and I went and we have been to several all inclusives, and I am already planning our return in the fall! It was so clean, the food was spectacular (best I’ve had at an all inclusive), and the staff was so courteous and friendly. I especially want to thank Enrique for the amazing beach service. We’ve never had that kind of beach service before! Enrique gets 5 stars and is a big reason we will return. Don’t hesitate to book this resort! They are also taking care of all of the covid testing on site.
Worst service I've experienced on a resort in years
Had a below-average experience at the Riu during New Year's. Every day was pretty chilly so I wouldn't go back during the winter again. My partner and I went to the beach the first day and couldn't get comfortable because of the cool weather but ESPECIALLY because every minute (not an exaggeration) there was someone coming up to us trying to sell us something. At first, it was okay and then it became too much to the point we didn't go back to the beach during the rest of our trip. The next few days we spent by the pool and Victor was an AMAZING host by the pool. He looked after us, remembered our order every day, and sometimes politely turned down our tips. He made the experience by the pool awesome. Other staff didn't even pretend to care about us. We were in a rush to grab breakfast before our transfer came to take us back to the airport on our last day. We put our bags in the wrong area, near the reception desk, because that is where the staff put them when we checked-in. The lobby staff saw us in a rush, almost running to grab breakfast, and they just shouted across the lobby "those bags go here" and pointed to an area near the main doors. We had to run back and grab our bags and bring them to that aera. They didn't even bother to help us. The pool towel station closes at 6pm so if you still have your towels past 6pm, you must bring them back to your room and then bring them down the next day to get them replaced with fresh towels. We thought that was ridiculous so we went to the front desk and asked them if they could take our towels in exchange for our towel cards back. We waited about 15 minutes to speak to someone because there were 3 large families traveling together, NONE OF THEM WEARING MASKS, in the lobby. When we finally caught the attention of someone, they told us that next time to remember that the line starts where the family was. We didn't want to be near that huge family because none of them were wearing masks and no one said anything to them so we stood to the side of the desk. There are a handful of other experiences we did not enjoy but I will give the resort 1 star for the impeccable cleaning services, 1 star for Victor at the pool, and 1 star for the food. It was decent and always replenished and fresh. The service at some of the locations made up for what it lacked. Would not return to this hotel and would not recommend to anyone. Will reconsider staying at any Riu in the future as well.
Solo Canadian Traveling at Covid
I just returned from the Riu Palace Riveria Maya and traveling alone at this time of weird travel.. This hotel is pretty good by normal standards. I been to many Riu hotels before and kinda knew what to expect from the basic value of this hotel, it wasn't busy at all maybe at tops 50% occupancy some days 35%, which made the service pretty good .. The beach server guys and pool servers were on point and knew your drinks with refills coming when you didn't even ask but where thinkin of it.. the food was good as well at the buffets but was only at the italian a la carte always and the food there was very good the obbosscco stewed beef.. a 1 perfect.. the others i didn't get to try but was on a first come first serve basis for service in which was way better to do than appointments.. Shows were so..so Rooms were very good and modern, clean.. Location to town is perfect with in walking distance.. 5 dollar cab ride. As for safety there are not many other nationals down there but local mexican and american residents so the mask thing is a enfored to your own discrection in which makes for comfortable times with out a mask cop yelling at you so remember this is vaction.. enjoy it.. The airports are enforced and strict. the test to come home was done at the hosptial at 265 american in which my coverage has to be done here with most canadian coverages,, so be prepared for that or no return flight home.. and is very close to this resort so its perfect without worry..8 to 10 am without a appointment
Great visit during Covid
We visited right after Christmas with our 18 month old son. We had previously been to this resort 6 years ago and really liked the rennovations. Overall, we felt safe with the COVID precautions and were able to have a very enjoyable stay with our son. Daily housekeeping service was excellent and staff were very friendly and accomodating. Pros: -COVID precautions taken here were more strict than in most places in Illinois. Temp checks were required before entering any restaurant and hand sanitizer was required each time before entering a buffet. All staff had on masks at all times. Even when going into downtown Playa del Carmen, masks, temp check, and hand sanitizer was required before entering the outdoor shopping mall. -Comfortable stay with our toddler. All restaurants had high chairs available with wrapped high chair tabletops. The hotel had a pack and play crib for us to use. While having an open concept bathroom could be less than ideal for families with older children, it worked for us and our son absolutely loved the bathtub. -Service was great. We especially loved Lidia each morning at Don Julio's and Florencio on the beach. Everyone was very attentive, friendly, and helped make dining with toddler much less stressful. Thank you all! -Food was good and it was nice not having to make reservations. We were seated immediately at each restaurant. All restaurants were open during our visit which was also nice as I know some other resorts have limited their options. They resort did a very night job decorating for NYE and making a festive atmosphere. -Beach is lovely. No seaweed in the water. Cons: -Children's pool and play area is very small and limited. -It can be loud at night if people are walking through the hallways. We had a great trip and would definitely not hesitate to visit again.
