Disappointing return visit

Reviewed 18 september, 2022

We recently spent 11 days at this resort. This was our 4 visit. 2 wks prior to stay I emailed a rm request ( choice of 2 bldgs & ground floor). I received a standard reply that they would take our request but no promises. Which was fine. On arrival I asked about request & was told the bldgs were upgraded rooms & we would have to pay more for them. Nothing in their email stated this. I then asked for closest bldg to beach not an upgrade & was told okay. When they returned to check in I was told we would be in a bldg the farthest you could be from the beach. This was not acceptable so I inquired about the upgrade price. Frist I was told 65.00 a night, when I balked I was told 55.00. Now I have been to Mexico a lot & I have bartered with vendors but, never thought I would have to for a room. We did end up paying the upgrade. Since this was our 4th visit I knew what the room looked like & ours was not any better than any room we had ever had. We have always stayed in bldgs close to beach but not oceanview & never paid upgrades. This info should have been explained in the email they sent me. Now on to the cheapening of things: No room service Frig in rm had 2 beers, 3 sodas & 1 sparkling water Food service had cheapened considerably since last time we stayed. (We are NOT picky eaters) Top shelf liquors were an additional charge as well as wines & some beers. Due to the above items we will not stay at any Iberostar in the future.

So much to lave here, but please please PLEASE Tucan, enough with the captive birds!

This was our second visit - we were at the hotel last year but only managed 2 days before having the rest of the holiday torpedoed by the UK covid rules. Happily we were given a voucher by BA to come back. Our experience was much the same - which is to say, wonderful. Our family have never done AI resorts in the past, so it was an adventure for the teens to be able to stuff their faces with ice cream and chips 24/7. A great base to explore the Yucatan peninsula from too (don't be put off by the hire car horror stories - it was a doddle to drive around the region) We chose this resort for the wildlife, and weren't disappointed. Each day we saw both howler and spider monkeys, plus a plethora of furry and feathery exotica at every turn including our favourites, the adorable coatis. If you're into wildlife, this is the place for you. The thing I don't understand is how a place with such a wildlife-friendly ethos can have captive birds. There are toucans in cages, flamingos with clipped wings, and (worse) macaws chained to stands in reception. Seriously Tucan, this is not cool. it's just not acceptable in this day and age, and you must address it if you genuinely want to be considered an eco friendly resort. Hence 4 stars, not 5.

Most beautiful resort we've been to

Our vacation at the Iberostar Tucan was just beautiful. We are club members so we spent most of our time at the member’s beach area. The beach area was nice, but I was disappointed they do not have an air-conditioned building with a bathroom for members like other resorts. They do have beach drink service for members and that staff is amazing. I was extremely disappointed to find out they sell passes to this area so there aren’t enough beach beds for actual members some days. The prestige club at the front of the other hotel and is nice and has great service. None of the stores there are for members so you don’t get any discounts. The pool bar was absolutely beautiful and the staff were fun. The spa was nice and the massage was great. The food was all good and the Mediterranean was our favorite. The night shows were moderately ok, the fire show is the best one. We chose the walkout beach suite and thought it was absolutely gorgeous and luckily it was right behind the member’s beach area so I could use my own bathroom. Our friends stayed one floor up and the view was amazing. They even had cute towel animals on our bed each day. However, none of us were able to sleep at night for the whole week! I’m not sure if it’s because of the Wi-Fi routers being so close or what but that part was horrible and why I don’t really want to go back. We really loved the jungle area in the middle where you can see the monkeys all day and the walk was absolutely breathtaking. We never found a good snorkeling area like in some of the reviews we read so that was a bit disappointing.
