Another Weekend Visit by our Family Group of 20

Reviewed 3 october, 2022

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel about half a dozen times in the last 12-15 years in former Marriott days and now under the Elite Selection label. We have always loved its location and found it a good base forlocal and regional visits. We feared standards would fall under the present owners, but, although some economy measures are evident, the accommodation and decor have improved markedly over the last 12 months, and the staff are unbelievably friendly and helpful. We found receptionist Ronnie exceptionally friendly and facilitative, and nothing was too much trouble for housekeeping staff Ellie and Wilailak. The latter endeared herself to our grandchildren by responding to their teasing and joining in their little games. Everywhere was very clean and the food was plentiful. The pool and jacuzzi were a welcome afternoon base after spending the morning at the South Shields marine park and then the extensive funfair across the road. The following morning we went successfully searching for sea glass on Seaham's beaches.

We would not recommend this Hotel, it was NOT Grand at all. Firstly we decided to stay an extra night as we wanted to watch the state funeral of the late queen, we were told we couldn’t go into the communal/bar area as there was a private “party” there was no such party. There was a coach load of octogenarians who were sitting watching the funeral. We could of easily joined them, as paying guests of the hotel I think it’s fair to say we should of had access to the bar and TV lounge. The young guy at reception was rude. The other staff were very friendly .. The rooms were very tired/shabby and we had to make our own bed…. There was 1 towel between both of us, although we asked for more and were happily provided with more. Pretty bad all round .. oh and breakfast was cold …

My wife and I paid nearly £300 for a room in this hotel, the room looks nothing like the pictures and the view is of a car park, it's an old tired room, we came in to empty biscuit rappers and a telly not working. For the money we paid we have stayed in some amazing hotels around the UK, this is not one, I am disgusted by the room and the price incurred. I would recommend staying away.

A lovely stay

We went to Sunderland and stayed overnight the Grand ht and found the hotel welcoming and very clean. The room had all one could ask for including extra towels, iron and Ironing board, tea making facilities etc. and very large. I think next time we will go for a room with a sea view as the view excellent.

Weve been to this hotel a few times for both business and a cheeky weekend away. The entrance is wonderful with a warm welcome from the reception team, easy check in.The pool is very dated but does the job again staff very efficiant.Adan in the bar couldnt do enough for us he is so very kind and so polite.Breakfast is outstanding, grace always welcomes you with a smile.Rooms large and airey and always clean, yes windows could do with a clean but you are opposite a beach! Such a lovely view aswell.Turn left out of the front and you will find Santinis a fantastic little restaurante, food and staff outstanding. We will be back very soon.Thankyou
