Privileged location and wonderful staff are a constant in the Hotel Tambau

Reviewed 7 august, 2019

This lovely tropical garden hotel was inaugurated in 1970 under the military government for entirely different purposes and today stands as a monument to the era in an ecologically delicate location. Built on the tip of the Tambau promontory, the Atlantic Ocean laps up against the foundation at high Tide, staff are characteristically very warm, attentive, and the model of Brazilian hospitality. I had an unfortunate experience with one security guard at the end of a previous visit, expressed my displeasure at that time, and was welcomed this time with open arms. It is so nice to be remembered and appreciated! I have stayed at this hotel and brought groups of friends and students there for over 20 years, and, while hotel properties always need freshening, this unique lovely venue with its sumptuous pools, gardens and views is well worth the stay.

The sad tale of how Mismanagement has destroyed a hotel in a Privileged Location

Reviewed 18 march, 2019

I have over 15 years of experience staying at the Hotel Tambau, or Tambau hotel as it is now called. Formerly part of the Tropical hotel chain, this hotel build upon a gorgeous promontory on the beach In João Pessoa has seen a number of changes in management adversely affecting both staff and services. After having stayed at this hotel perhaps 30 times and having taken dozens of my students to this hotel, I can no longer in good faith patronize nor support this place that has gone terribly downhill. Beyond their staff losses, elimination of their sauna, decision to charge for juice or eggs with breakfast, the hotel has evidently instituted a new policy is regarding security which is completely offensive, including the posting of armed security officers at the long entranceway towards the front desk. Far from making guests feel more secure, security officers give the impression to guests that we are entering into a armed area rather than a hospitality center. One of them, Douglas, accosted three of us laden with shopping bags at high noon and demanded we show hotel identification cards as we were approaching the front desk -which was staffed with three or four employees. There is nothing like an angry security officer with a automatic weapon to make one feel like they’re on vacation. I demanded to speak with one of the Administrator is at the front desk who apologized profusely, but I ask you, does this sound like what you want to do on a vacation?

Overpriced, outdated, poor service

Reviewed 5 march, 2019

I stayed at Tambaú for a conference and though my expectations weren't high, I was terribly disappointed. The service was poor, Its like every area of the hotel was understaffed. We got an upgrade for one of the front rooms where the ocean hits the walls of the building at high tide. You could see the metal structure showing outside and and the humidity and mould smell in the room were quite strong. The wort happened at check out, when the bill unlawfully included the optional 10% service fee on everything. When called up on in they removed some, but not all. I am Brazilian but was travelling with a bunch of international people who were clueless of what the charges were, so in my view they were taking advantage of us all.

Comfortable Stay

Reviewed 1 september, 2018

I cannot say that I agree with the recent reviews shown on my right; I quite liked this hotel. The room was small but okay. I didn't really understand the floorplan of the bathroom, however– The door swung inward and could barely clear the shower or toilet cramped beyond it. The shower also had a dangerous, jutting lip that nearly always tripped me and my roommate whenever we tried to hop over it to get in or out of the bathroom. That being said, the breakfasts and lunches were quite good as was the one pizzeria dinner our group had there. We and our sponsored children loved the pool, playground, trampoline, and playroom provided to us, and we found the staff friendly and helpful as well. Some of the others went to the beach across the way and the markets across the street opposite the beach. I did not, but I can say that the hotel is situated in a prime location, thusly.

Very old, basic, simple hotel

Reviewed 14 december, 2017

Maybe this was a 4 Star Hotel decades ago but it is in desperate needed of modernisation. Rooms were extremely basic. Ours had a few small ants in, and the toilet continuously smelled of urine. We asked this to be rectified a couple of times but the smell wouldn’t disappear. Breakfast was included.. a good selection, but the same thing every day. Overall food and drink service can be extremely slow sometimes... they need more serving staff. The boy server thaylis was the best member of Staff who really tried his best! We had pizza one evening by the pool, freshly made however they lost the piece of paper with our order (it fell on the floor!?) so we waited over an hour for it to be served. Very very basic hotel, good location.
