Not as relaxing as we hoped!

Reviewed 10 august, 2022

We arrived on a Saturday night after a long 20 hour journey. As we drove down the ‘strip’. The bars and nightclubs were busy, and music was pumping out. Our car came to a stop right in the middle. When we checked in, we couldn’t hear the receptionist speak over the sound of the next door nightclub. We were shown to our room ‘ in a quiet area’. The room was stunning, and beautifully furnished with lots of lovely personal touches. We went to sleep that first night to the sound of the thumping base. The hotel is stunning, and the staff are super friendly and attentive. Due to the proximity to the nightclubs, we cut our stay short and relocated somewhere quieter.

Nice hotel. Terrible management and many things to be aware of before you book.

A classic case of poor management that puts great employees in impossible situations with customers. The hotel is nicely equipped and the staff in restaurants and around the hotel were very friendly and helpful. Our experience was radically different when it came to dealing with reception and the overall management policies and approach. Our main issues 1) when you arrive they take (on top of a resort fee charge) a large 16000 Pesos deposit that they say is for “security”, but is otherwise described with spectacular vagueness. As a result you aren’t at all clear what I it is for and what transaction has taken place. When challenged reception said it was a “payment” (which got us worried) and then said it wasn’t and that it was a “retention”. They then (vaguely) said it was a prepayment for food and drink. The overall impression left us with no confidence that we would ever see our money again. At checkout they then asked for a further payment (of our actual bill) and suggested vaguely that the retention would come through to our bank in “a few days”. You have to take it on trust, and whilst I quite accept that what they do may be legitimate, it is described and explained in such a poor and evasive way that you don’t find trust easy. 2) beware - very little is free in the hotel. The guy who showed us our rooms said the water and coffee was free but we were promptly charged for both the next day. After challenging this both charges were refunded. Turns out only the bottle of water by the sink in the room is free but the (identical) bottle of water on the shelf above the minibar is not. If you drink from the wrong one and don’t touch the other you are charged. Incredible. 3) the hotel is near several very noisy restaurants and clubs. As a result you can hear thumping bass until 3am in most of the hotel rooms. (Note the most expensive rooms with private pools are closest to the bars, so the noise in these must be deafening!). When we complained to the concierge she kindly gave us an upgrade to a room further away from the bars - we were lucky in that respect. Other than that staff just shrugged their shoulders about the problem. Be aware they actually provide ear plugs in the rooms to help you sleep. In 40 years of travelling I have never seen this. Astonishing 4) we visited in August and there was a 4m deep “dune” of sargasso seaweed at the beach tide line. I understand the problem is bad this year and that projects to ease the problem have been delayed. However during our stay the hotel made no evident effort to clear the pile of seaweed at all. (More shrugging of shoulders). Neighbouring hotels had armies of people trying to clear some of the seaweed away or at least clear away gaps in the seaweed so you could get to the surf more easily. 5) most disappointing of all is that all the above issues appear to have been repeatedly mentioned in previous and recent tripadvisor reviews. There is nothing new here but it would seem hotel management have no desire to change their practices to avoid further and similar complaints.

Class and elegance in the middle of Tulum

Reviewed 5 august, 2022

This is an outstanding place in the middle of Tulum confusion and noise. The room I had was luxurious but with elegance. The service is decently efficient and the people smile at you effortlessly. You can relax on the beach or on the pool side and you will be served efficiently and with courtesy. Great place to relax after climbing on a maya pyramid.

Best beach club ever!

So clean, quiet, picturesque, and luxurious! Rafael was the best waiter we could have ever asked for! We came here for two beach days in Tulum, and I wouldn’t have done anything differently. Truly paradise.
