A grand hotel now frayed around the edges

The pros: 1) location on the Zócalo in the center is great. Rooms on the front face the plaza with a nice view. 2) Staff are friendly, helpful and hardworking. 3) The hotel restaurant has a diverse, mostly seafood menu, which they prepare well. The breakfast buffet is ok. 4) Rooms are spacious. 5) Free valet parking in a secure location. O the other hand: 1) This was once a grand hotel, but its furnishings and facilities will not meet contemporary luxury hotel expectations. 2) While the front rooms have a great view, there is loud music from the Zocalo Thursday through Sunday from around 5 pm till 2 am or later. Between Christmas week and New Year week, it is nightly.
Almost but not quite

We stayed at the Gran Hotel Diligencias as part of an organized tour. The property appears to be an old Veracruz grande dame hotel. It is very well positioned right on the city's zocalo and cathedral and is very central to the radius in which tourists might care to wander, with plenty of restaurants nearby. It is a very attractive-looking building and the common areas are tastefully done and speak of quality. Our room was clean and certainly serviceable, and the air conditioning was welcome in the humid climate. However, every few minutes, apparently when the condenser would come on, a very loud metallic bang was emitted and we had to shut the system off in order to sleep. The on-premises restaurant is quite good, and the included buffet breakfast was extensive and also quite good. Having said all this, our experience, at least our room, needed some attention. The thin and very worn sheets were quite badly stained. There were brownish stains on them as well as ink stains. A flat sheet was used in place of a fitted sheet, which kept easily pulling off the mattress. The thin and very worn bath towels were dirty and I had to request clean ones from housekeeping. The replacements weren't much better but we used them. The ceiling in the rather tired bathroom was very moldy and needed a good bleaching. If this hotel wants to attract tourists to Veracruz it's going to have to do just a little bit better.
Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again

The location of this hotel is perfect, close to restaurants and the square. Our room was large with a king sized bed, refrigerator, safe and large window opening unto the pool area. Very helpful staff. Very clean. Attractive pool area. Wifi worked better in public areas than from our bed.
Easy walk to the harbor

Great location, easy walk to the harbor where you can take a photo of the large and brightly painted “Veracruz” sign. We enjoyed our dinner. The beds were hard, but after making a request, they quickly added some softer padding. We enjoyed our hotel meals: Salmon and crab.

I would recommend this hotel for your visit to Veracruz only downside was bed very hard always woke up with back ache and tub glass door was oversized for the tub always hurt my toes getting out of shower and I would put the do not disturb & no cleaning sign still got a knock on the door and my bed was made when I came back from sightseeing
