A very nice property—sorry so much is closed because of COVID. Close to a lot of historic sites
The kitchen was quite adequate & the layout with 2bedrooms & 2 bathrooms was great for privacy. It was very nice to have a washer & dryer right in the unit so we didn’t have to go down the hall or to another building & watch it for hours
Comfortable room, disappointing resort - Not recommended
Overall, this resort is a disappointment. We spent a week in March and found not a lot to like. The units have all the charm of a typical suburban subdivision, set down alongside all the other housing developments. The grounds were generally clean, though a walk around the pond found trash scattered on the far side. The room was clean upon arrival, but mid-week cleaning service was suspended - find the dumpster and empty your own garbage. Resort activities, other than virtual tv group activities (Would anyone on vacation actually do this?) were non-existent. The restaurant was closed. The coffeeshop was closed. The exercise room was closed. Miniature golf was closed. The historic centerpiece mansion was closed. The pools were closed. When I inquired if daily "resort fees" had been adjusted in light of the closures, I received an email (politely worded, I'll note) that these fees were unchanged and covered costs of incidentals such as parking (200+ acres and they charge for self-parking at your unit?) and wifi (Lo-speed "check your email" wifi is covered; "premium" wifi incurs an extra charge.) Days Inn down the road ($54) offers parking and wifi without the extra charge, and they throw in breakfast. Of course, we all recognize that any hotel is in business to make money, but it's possible to offer a level of service, attention, and comfort that leaves customers with a feeling that the business has earned its money. The multiple calls to our room to entice us to attend a resort membership meeting were so annoying that we unplugged the phone. I expect with warmer weather and a better health outlook Powhatan will provide more of what is expected of a resort, but if you want something special, keep looking.
Love this place!
Love the peace and serenity I feel when I stay here. Just beautiful. :) I've been here for four years every February and due to the pandemic had to come in April this year. Weather is amazing and everything is in bloom. Very low-key and relaxing. Will be back.
Nice but not outstanding
The resort is well-placed, close enough to activities but far enough from "town" to be quiet. The air is clean, and the little deck was great for morning caffeine with the local bird population. Unfortunately, there is no shelter of any kind, so if it's raining or otherwise inclement you're just SOL. The TVs were updated and great for rainy days, and the 2-bedroom unit had enough space to spread out when the weather discouraged outdoor activities. The in-unit washer/drier was small but sufficient for two. The water pressure and temperature in the shower was great. The climate control was adequate, and the ornamental fireplace with a blower was a nice touch for cool evenings. That's where the good stuff ends, though. The kitchen was poorly stocked; only one normal pot, one small skillet, and one enormous pot, and only only one lid among them. Plenty of utensils though. As has become the norm since the real estate bubble burst, the appliances are flimsier than the cheapest home depot specials I've ever seen, but functional. Detergent is provided for three washes. The bowls are so small they can't even hold an entire can of soup? How in the heck does a 2br/2ba unit NOT have a laptop workspace? There's an alcove where the old tube TV obviously resided, but now that there's a LCD on the wall it's an awkwardly empty should have been super easy to put a desk/workspace there. The bed was like a slab in a morgue and NOT conducive to a good night's sleep. However, the chairs and sofa are quite comfortable. The Wifi is stable but *abysmally* slow, and I refuse to pay again (on top of the "resort fee") for something that should be included at a top-tier resort like they do at every 2-star motel chain in the country. Check-in was more involved than what we're used to, though we were able to shut down the obligatory sales pitch with a few firm "NO"s. The front desk called mid-week with another timeshare pitch under the guise of making sure the unit was ok; after declining multiple times again, to their credit, they fixed the sole repairable issue we had in a matter of minutes. Overall the Powhatan is clean, the grounds adequately maintained, and located such that many attractions are within a short drive, but if you're looking for a comfortable resort stay instead of a "base of operations" you may want to pass.
Best of the affordable resort condos but clientele are wearing me down - past the point of returning
I like it here. This is my third week-long stay since mid-Feb. Apartments are clean, fresh, and spacious especially compared to the competitors in town (dismal by comparison for the same price). Everything works. Staff are great. I’m here for family business and not for vacay and have had to work remotely from the apartment; it’s gone well, but every single time I have loud and completely inconsiderate neighbors. Like a 5-10pm party with a loud speaker and DJ, my walls vibrating from their music - you know the deal. And this was on a Weds night. Last trip similar loud music at 3:30pm on a Thursday during my work zoom meeting, different apartment, different people. Today one resident rang my doorbell repeatedly for 20 minutes wanting to gain entry to the foyer by their apartment door (there are 2 doorbells, guess they rang them both not caring that one would be mine). Anyway my multi-visit sample of Powhatan suggests this type of behavior taints the experience on a regular basis (last night - during the Weds party- I did call security about the noise but it was over an hour before they turned it off). It’s a party crowd who seem ignorant of basic social courtesies. Get watcha pay for I guess.
