More about the hotel
Pretty good. Seems to have good covid-19 measures.
This hotel is a little old, but our room and the hallways seemed to be recently updated. They advertised covid-19 measures, and the common areas and room (except for the carpet) seemed very clean. As a note, my wife hated the place, but I thought it compared to most places we have stayed while on vacation in the past. While looking for something on the floor I noticed the carpet had not been vacuumed very well. The room was spacious and the refrigerator nice and large. We had a quiet night and I wouldn't have an issue staying there in the future.
Classic Wyoming
I don't understand the terrible reviews. And frankly, the first time I stayed here, I was put off by the reviews, but the price of a room here sucked me in and I'm glad I gave it a chance! I'm somewhat of a picky person and I don't hand out 5 star reviews much, but I'm giving this place one. Here's why: Obviously, this place isn't the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in. I've now stayed here twice this summer and enjoyed each stay. The rooms are large and clean, good water pressure in the bathroom, they're pet friendly, I love the staff - from the front desk to the staff in the lounge and restaurant, they're all great! Yes, it's a little dated. The hallways are a complete maze with an odd room numbering system that I can't seem to figure out - I got lost more than one time! The fitness center needs some work - the two treadmills do NOT work - and I've tried to use them on two separate stays (once in July, and now in Sept). Please fix! Cuz I'll be back. I ate in the lounge on both of my trips. There's just somethin' about. You walk in, and they've got Sturgill Simpson blasting on the jukebox, bunch of locals at the bar, a few tourists at the tables, and everyone looks like they're having fun. It's dingy and dark and a little shady - it's exactly what I'd expect from a Gillette, Wyoming bar! CLASSIC! I love it! Plus the food is good - Mushroom Swiss burger is to die for. Breakfast isn't free. But it's GOOD. So eat there. Honestly, I'd rather pay for the breakfast and get decent food, than eat a stale bagel, questionable fruit and powdered eggs from your typical free hotel breakfast. This place is authentic, classic Wyoming, and ya gotta eat in bar and/or restaurant. I'm glad that Gillette is a good stopping point for my trips out west from Minnesota. I'll definitely be back
Not up to BW standards
This is a decent place and had clean rooms. Only negative is older and needs some updates. Plug-in at bedside didn't hold plug for my CPAP and no other plugs by bed to plug-in. Very annoying the front desk person couldn't provide an extension cord and asked if I cld wait for a maintenance person that wld show up at midnight. I ended up moving a lamp with Plug-ins to night stand but sometime in night stopped working. I would not recommend staying here if you have medical equipment needed by the bed.
Well renovated "motel" (mostly)
It looks like this used to be a motel. Our room had a door to the courtyard by the pool in addition to the door in the hallway as usual. This area is nice, with some grills provided, along with some seating. Unfortunately, there were NO trash cans out there. Just about everywhere was cleaned well, except for the carpet in our room. It looked 5 years older than the carpet in the hallways. Also, it was not vacuumed along the base boards or behind any furniture. Also, the room had a musty smell. It was a great price, but it is quite a bit further from the Black Hills attractions than other hotels. Gillette is beautiful and we didn't mind the drive. We thought it was well worth it.
Army Reunion Trip back to Upstate New York, from Southern California
I think Best Western is one of the best hotels for the dollar you spend, and their properties have been in excellent condition. All the Customer Service Reps at the front desk have been courteous, and professional. In Reno, NV I got upgraded to a Suite once I signed up for the REWARDS Program and She was awesome to help me out. Along my trip on the North Route back to New York all the Best Westerns have been above my standards. Being a US Army Veteran, I am on a budget, and Best Western is a great way to stay within my budget.
